Episode one features the Latino Mural Movement of the 1960’s, Nuyorican spoken word, and editorial cartoonist Lalo Lopez. Created in New York, the Nuyorican spoken word is a form of artistic expression that emerged from the tumultuous 1960’s and continues to influence and inspire the American Puerto Rican community. Episode two features Miriam Colon and the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater Company (PRTT) of New York, Tejana musical artist Selena, and the Santero art tradition of New Mexico.

As part of this episode, a story reveals New Mexico artisans known as Santeros who engage in an art form heavily steeped in history and tradition. Santeros present an interesting juxtaposition of imposed religion and Native American culture. Santero artists Charlie Carillo, Nick Hernandez, and historians Sabine Olivari, Sylvia Rodríguez discuss their views.

Visiones: Latino Art & Culture- Episode Three

Episode three features Luis Valdez and the legendary Teatro Campesino, a segment of San Antonio, Texas Day of the Dead Celebration, he image of the Virgen de Guadalupe as a Latina icon, Experimental border filmmaker Willie Varela, and a profile of Chicago’s soapbox artist Carlos Cortez.

The second segment of episode three is based in San Antonio and looks at how religious themes, images, icons, and ceremonies manifest themselves in Latino art and culture. It documents the Day of the Dead celebration that incorporates the building of altars and the image of the Virgen de Guadalupe. Featured artists include Alma Lopez and Cesar Martinez.

In the third segment, a story on performance art is explored featuring San Francisco performance artist Guillermo Gomez Peña, performance troupes such as ASCO, and performance art pioneers the Royal Chicano Airforce.

Visiones: Latino Art & Culture- Episode Four
Original air date: Sunday, September 26, 2004

Episode four begins with New York’s Latino hip hop dance and culture. Then it travels to Miami’s unique Afro-Cuban sound, and ends in Los Angeles with modern dance pioneer Rudy Perez.

The first segment of episode four documents the movement, history, and culture of hip hop. The story looks at the new wave of Latinos who took hip hop and created a culture that revolutionized the hip hop genre. It features New York hip hop dancing couple Rokafella and Kwikstep.

The second segment takes us to Miami to experience a music that is a blending of traditional Cuban music, explosive jazz, and American Pop, called the Miami Sound. Musical artists Willie Chirino is featured in this segment.

The story of Rudy Perez is uncovered in the third segment of this episode. Perez is a pioneer of the Post Modern Dance Movement, who though legally blind continues to create and inspire as teacher. Perez also choreographs for his Los Angeles based Modern Dance Company.

Also in this episode, we discover the story on El Paso based Experimental Filmmaker Willie Varela, a pioneer of independent personal film, exploring themes of urban and border life.

Episode five highlights the Taco Shop Poets Southern California, early tent theater of the Southwest called Carpas, and performance art in San Francisco.

The first segment features the San Diego California based Taco Shop Poets that blend the spoken word with lively beats. This group of Chicano poets strives to take their social and political poetry to where people are likely to congregate- the Taco Shops.
